A major transformation takes place in the Budapest Zoo these years: the institution is significantly expanding. The newest element, the steampunk-style shark-nursery has opened, where young predators learn how to interact with other fish and with their caregivers.

The new building has a total of three different sized pools, which are filled with one million liters of seawater. We can see several unique animals here: black-fined shark, nurse shark and zebra shark as well as a variety of rays, guitar fish, bat fish and even sea-cock will swim in the aquariums.

The animals are supposed to move into the twice-large pools of the neighboring Pannon Park’s „Biodome” in 2021. The special building will be about 1.7 acre big within the new 5-acre territory called Pannon Park and costs a total of 44 billion forints. The interior of the building provides the most natural environmental conditions, so hopefully will be a much better place to live in for the animals.

The 17,000-square-meter big Pannon Park will present the ancient wildlife of the Carpathian Basin with animals and plants, and based on the plans, other animals, for example, elephants would move here into the Biodome. Flamingos will also have a new home, avoiding winter relocation, and the wing truncation. So this new shark-nursery is just the first step, and we can’t wait to see the others!
