The funicular at the Buda-side of the city was the second one in the world – only the funicular in Lyon preceded it – and now we celebrate its 150th birthday.
The funicular at Clark Adam Square, in the Buda-side of the city begun its service on 2 March 1870 and it is not a wonder that a lot of things have happened to it since then. It was hit by a bomb in 1944 but rebuilt by 1986 and today it is not only part of the public transport system but also a tourist attraction.
It works every day from 7:30 am to 10 pm, a ticket costs 1400 HUF. It can carry 24 passengers, eight in each wagon, at a time. Every year, it transports approximately 600 000 – 1 million people.
