If you’re a bike person like us, you’ve probably wondered about whether it’s possible or not to use Budapest public transport with bicycle. The answer is a bit complicates: on some vehicles yes, on others, no. Transporting bicycles is possible on all suburban railway lines, on board public transport boats and the cogwheel railway and also on several buses (on bus lines 65, 65A and 165, on trolleybus line 77) and tram lines (56, 56A, 59, 59A, 59B and 61). If you’re not sure about a tram or bus, always search for the bike pictogram next to the door. If here is one, everything is okay.

It’s also important, that bikes need to be fastened using the provided hook-and-loop (Velcro) fasteners on trams. On certain vehicles, the area designated for bikes is also shared by wheelchairs and baby carriages, therefore bike users are kindly asked to give priority to boarding wheelchair or baby carriage passengers. To transport a bicycle, one has to validate a single ticket (or one from a block of ten tickets) or have a bicycle pass, both along with a validated ticket or pass for the passenger.

So these are the basic information, but we’ve left the best to the end: Soon, bicycles can be transported on metro line M4. Bicycles will be only allowed on M4 because there are elevators on every station, and bicycle is not allowed to be transported on the escalator.
