Retro Budapest

Enjoy the beauty and peacefulness of a bygone era with the help of these rare photos and video about Budapest in the Seventies. Really retro!

Everything labelled “retro” is really fashionable nowadays. But that’s not the only reason why I would like to show you some rare pictures and a recently found Norwegian video about Budapest: my intention is to take you to a trip through time to a really peaceful era, where things were quite different. Hungarian people lived a slower and more satisfied life, and I think that in a way, they were happier.

But let’s talk about the rare recordings I’ve already mentioned. At first, you can find fascinating photos on the website Vintage.es – the coloured pictures were taken by a tourist called Louise who visited Budapest with friends in 1975.

And secondly, I’d like to show you a recently found half-hour long film, made for a Norwegian television in the Seventies, titled “Rendezvous in Budapest” (“Stevnemøte i Budapest”). It is a rare treasure because it shows to viewers how the significant sights of the city (Margaret Island, Matthias Church, etc.) looked like at the height of Hungary’s era under communism, and because Kati Kovács – one of the most famous Hungarian singers of that time – leads us through a day in Budapest’s past.
